Naming Creativity + {Shrek Juice} - HLTT5

Today's post could be titled: "How to get your kids to eat more veggies" or "How to get your hubby (who sometimes acts like a kid) to eat more veggies."  The answer? Deception, of course! OK, well, not so much deception as creativity. That sounds so much more positive and wholesome, right?  I have found that giving something a fun name, like calling tiny pieces of broccoli "Broccoli babies" gets kids to try new things and eat more than they normally might. Earlier this week I took Babycakes out to lunch with my folks.  I ordered hummus and fruit specifically for Babycakes, which she devoured. And ordered a kale, hazelnut, heirloom tomato risotta to split for lunch.  It arrived (beautifully, though I forgot to snap a pic...oops!) and she refused to take a bite.  Lips clamped shut.  Sip of water, yes. Another bite of fruit, yes.  A bite of this deliciously decadent risotta I knew she'd love, no.

Until...

I called the risotta "Daddy's rice." Then, she couldn't get enough. Spoonful after spoonful went in.  I didn't feel so bad or too deceptive. I mean, risotto is a lot like rice.  It just goes to show that creativity when it comes to naming foods for your children, or significant others, goes a long way!

Introducing this week's Healthy Living Thirsty Thursday:

{Shrek Juice}

High in beta-carotene, lutein, manganese, zinc, calcium, and Vitamins K, C and E, this juice delivers a heavy nutritional punch.  It features 5 CUPS of spinach plus: kale, carrots, apples, lemon, & golden honeydew.

I could have called it Green Juice, or Spinach Juice... but, come on.  Shrek Juice sounds waaaaaaaaaaay more fun!! Thanks to Rebekah for pointing out that the green color resembled our big jovial green friend :)  Pair this drink with a showing of the movie, and I bet they'll down it in about 2.8 seconds flat!

Do you remember that Dear Hubby hates vegetables? When he saw this green juice, cutesie name or not, he was afraid.  But to his surprise, he loved it!  It is packed with green veggies, but sweet to the lips.

You just can't buy juice this healthy, veggie-packed, and delicious at a store.

Questions:

  • Do you ever call food different names to get your kids to eat it?
  • Do you "juice"?

that looks so yummy! i need to buy a blender ASAP.

I don't use my blender much. This was made in my Breville Juicer, which I love!!

the watch shrek option is a must at our house! ;)

Shrek has a special place in my heart b/c I saw it for the first time in Malaysia. With Chinese subtitles...and not one person in the theater laughing except for me!!! I don't think it translated well :p

I used an oldie so I could join in the linkup!

Hope you're getting some rest, missie!!!

I'd be interested to know your trick for juicing greens? Whenever I put them through my juicer (Breville), I get very little juice and it seems as though most of it ends up in the pulp container.

The best thing you can do is look for the proper order to juice vegetables and fruits. As you process the greens, more juice will come out through juicing in a certain order. Spinach and kale first, then celery, carrots, then apples, cucumbers, melons, and lemon (ginger if you use ginger) last. Hope this helps!

I did kale, half an apple, spinach, half an apple, then the carrots, melon, and lemon. Just the kale/apple/spinach made over 20 ounces!!

If you wish to juice leafy vegetables, it might be wise to invest in a masticating juicer, such as the Omega 8006. Juicing order is also important. I juice spinach first, then kale, collard greens watercress, arugula, etc. Then cabbages, onions, peppers, cucumbers etc., topping it off with carrots. Juice the leafy stuff first, then move onto the harder vegetables like beets or carrots. Hope this helps!

My daughter loves salmon but looked terrified the first time I suggested tilapia. So at our house, we eat white salmon. She loves it!

Sooooooo cute :) Thanks for sharing!!

Wellll..... my new dog won't eat fruits and vegetables. But she loves the sugar cereal I bought a month ago because I was in the Olympic spirit!! Hahaha. I love the shrek juice name!!!

And your new puppy adorned in pink everything is just the cutiest!! Sounds like she's a really good running partner too!

We have a juicer, but it's been a bit since we've used it. This recipe sounds delicious! (Also, I think the re-naming "trick" is a good one!)

It's worth dusting off the ol' juicer for this one!

So glad you liked the name! Now I really need to get a juicer!

Mine is often on sale at Amazon for $99. Maybe an upcoming birthday or early Christmas gift? :)

Good idea... and looks like a good recipe. My hubby hates zucchini, so when I makes something with zucchini (one of my faves, btw) I *lie* about what is in it until he gives his approval and then I fess up. I can't believe he hasn't caught on yet.

I'm not a huge zucchini fan either. What are some of your favorite things to make with it?

I just made this juice as a replacement to my Mean Green for the day and I have to say Thank You! This juice is sweet, tasty and pushed me out of my box (I don't really like melon). I will definitely be adding this juice to my Reboot recipes.

That was exactly my goal in creating this juice - to have it be an alternative to the regular mean green. Yay!!! I'm so glad you liked it! Here's another way to use up any leftover melon (I also don't usually like it much, but it is FABULOUS in this recipe): http://nosugarsweetlife.com/content/pure-perfection-aka-honeydew-caprese...

Hi Kelly, I recently found your blog and I so enjoy it! I love reading about your journey and I really love all the juicing recipies. I do a juice cleanse every so often and was getting really sick of the carrot, apple, beet combo that I always make. Can't wait to try your shrek juice!

Glad you're enjoying it! Yes, I find that I have to change up my juices to make it a bit more interesting. I'm thinking about doing a long weekend Reboot soon and document the shopping list, plan, etc.

I love to juice, but I never take the time! You make me want to bust out the juicer this weekend!

'nuf said :p

I don't have kids yet but this is helpful for the future and to share with parents at my story times :)
My husband and I make a greenish juice with kale or Swiss chard, sometimes rainbow, celery, cucumber, carrots, spinach, honeydew or cantaloup, and apples with lime or lemon.
This week I couldn't take my lunch because of a early meeting and I went to a local place that makes fresh juice, a surprise for a town of 26,000 in the foothills and I can't find one place where I live with over 87,000! Anyway, they have a kitchen sink juice: spinach, kale, carrots, ginger, lemon, apples, beets and cucumber. It was yummy! I always forget about the ginger!

I even bought ginger once to put in my juice, but left it on the counter next to the juicer and noticed after I'd finished my glass. Oops :)

This is perfect! I just bought a golden honeydew today and thought it might be nice to put through my juicer. I will try this tonight!

It was meant to be :) Let me know what you think of the juice once you try it!!
