Healthy {Strawberry Soda} - HLTT9

As you probably know, I try to limit my own sugar intake as well as Babycakes'. I don't want to be "one of those moms" whose kid goes crazy the minute they leave the house because they've been so deprived at home. But, I also don't feel the need to feed her dessert or soda or even fruit juice every day. She gets an occasional bite of daddy's cookie, or a lick of poppa's ice cream bar, or <gasp> a sip of poppa's soda. Notice it's all the men in her life that feed her the bad stuff?! :p So I created a special "soda" that I can feel good about giving to her. And her face lights up with excitement at the sight of her "fizzy big girl" drink.
Introducing this week's KID-FRIENDLY Healthy Living Thirsty Thursday:

{Strawberry Soda}
Served in an adorably cute cup with an equally cute straw:

It has all the fizz and fancy of a traditional soda, but without the high fructose corn syrup or other added sugars.

And it couldn't be any easier to make: 8 oz of Strawberry Banana smoothie plus 4 oz of Sparkling Water. The ingredients in this pre-made smoothie are: Strawberries, Bananas, Pear Juice, Apple Juice, Vitamin C. You could also just make your own, if you prefer.

Question:
- Did you drink soda as a child? Have you continued the habit as an adult?

Soda
Dr. Pepper was a staple item in my house when I was a child, and as an adult it has been a terribly hard habit to break - still haven't completely accomplished quitting. This looks like a great recipe to help keeps children on the right path of craving and wanting healthy items over bad ones!
Never thought of that!
I never thought to add in seltzer water to the Naked or Bolthouse products, but how fun. I'm now racking my brain for juices that I make that would go nicely with some bubbles (maybe your Sweet n Tart citrus juice?)
I did grow up drinking soda. And at a certain age, probably around 14 I switched to diet coke. After following your example and doing the 15 day reboot, I've pretty much given up soda and coffee. I'll still order a soda at a restaurant, but instead of drinking 2-3 refills, I'll drink 8oz of it.
It's amazing that by loading my body with vegetables and fruits, you suddenly stop craving all of the CRAP you were filling your body with before.
Soda on the weekends only
Growing up, I was allowed to drink soda, but only on the weekends. I think it helped to have it in moderation and I've grown up to not really drink all that much soda. I like it occassionally but I don't have it every day, or even every weekend :). I remember growing up a kid in my class had a can of Coke every.single.day for lunch and I couldn't get over it! I still keep in touch with him and his Coke habit has continued into adulthood. He recently had a to have a rotted tooth removed! Coincidence??? Maybe...

What a great idea!! I never cared for sodas, but I do crave hot chocolate. I have been making it with almond milk, carob, and stevia... hits the spot! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
Genius!!
We only had soda in our house growing up for special occasions (parties etc.), we also weren't allowed to have sugar cereals etc either. I never really got addicted to soda but DID get addicted to sugar. I struggled with a weight problem until I had my daughter and became morbidly obese as a adult in my late 20's. So out of control my doc told me I had less than 3% chance losing it on my own, I had done every weight loss diet out there with minimal success. I was told I would have diabetes or worse in 5 yrs or less. I finally looked into weight loss surgery and after a year of classes/research, I decided I needed to do it for my baby girl AND myself. I did NOT want to be a Mom that could not do things like ice skate, ski, even just play and run with my daughter. I now am 4 years out from surgery and maintaining my healthy weight and trying to find a balance for myself and my daughter to live a healthy but not deprived eating and lifestyle. It's a struggle and will be for the rest of my life. Sugar is like crack to me, and always will. I love your site and I will try this with my 5 yr old daughter. She too has recently been introduced to soda and asks for it constantly. I only allow her to get it when we eat out on occasion which isn't often. Thanks for this blog! ~ Mara
