{CHOcolate Cherry Greek Frozen Yogurt}

Growing up, I never liked cherries.  No actual cherries, no cherry pie, no cherry flavored drinks.  ICKOLA.  I think because it always seemed to remind me of nasty cough syrup that my parents made me down (in the most loving way of course).  But Dear Hubby loves them, so I've slowly but surely opened myself up to try them again.  It's that whole compromise thing.  I told you I was a PRO at marriage! Maybe the other reason I never bought cherries because they seemed soooooo dang expensive!  But this weekend they were on sale, so I bought my first bag of actual cherries at the grocery store.  It only took me 31 years to do it!  What better way to use them than to incorporate them into a Chobani recipe :)

Introducing CHOcolate Cherry Greek Frozen Yogurt:

I was inspired to make FroYo by this recipe posted on Chobani's Pinterest board (I love that place!).  I gathered my main ingredients: Vanilla Chobani, Organic Cherry Applesauce, & Chocolate Protein powder.

The only frozen "Greek" yogurt I've seen at the grocery store is made by Ben & Jerry's... and I don't know... I just don't trust it... that it's ACTUAL "Greek" yogurt.  It doesn't have enough protein!!  Maybe the Chobani peeps can email me their take on it (please Lindsay & Emily!)  So, I packed mine FULL of protein.

Stir until it's a creamy consistency. Then, freeze for 2 - 3 hours.

Mine came out a bit "too" frozen, so I let it thaw for about 10 minutes on the counter before I used a fork to break it up into little chunks.  Then I added 1/2 cup of milk (I only had whole in the house) and 1 Tbsp of Hershey's chocolate sauce. I used my good friend "Mr. Immersion Stick Blender" until creamy:

Scoop into your favorite pretty bowl and adorn with additional fresh cherries.

And enjoy before it melts :)  This has 155 calories and 17g of sugar per half cup serving, versus Ben & Jerry's 180 calories and 23g of sugar.  But it has more than DOUBLE the protein (!) 15g vs. Ben & Jerry's 6g!

PS.  I suggest chopping the cherries up before putting them on top of the FroYo, I just kept them whole for the pictures :)

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Vanilla Greek Yogurt (I used Chobani of course!)
  • 1/2 cup of organic Cherry Applesauce
  • 2 scoops of Chocolate Protein Powder
  • 1/2 cup of whole milk
  • 1 Tbsp of Hershey's chocolate sauce
  • 1 cup of fresh cherries

Directions:

  1. Mix Greek Yogurt, applesauce, and protein powder in a metal mixing bowl until creamy.
  2. Cover with foil and freeze for 2 hours.
  3. Take out of freezer, and break it up into smaller chunks with a fork.
  4. Add 1/2 cup of whole milk and 1 Tbsp of chocolate sauce
  5. Blend with an immersion blender until creamy.
  6. Top with additional diced cherries & enjoy!
  7. *Note - I found this particular recipe didn't "refreeze" well, so I would make a half-batch if you don't think you and your guests would finish it in one sitting.

Leftover Cherries:

I made Babycakes a creative breakfast this morning with the leftover cherries.  I used a cute heart-shaped Jello mold (that I bought at Ikea), filling each heart with a couple cherrios and a slice of cherry.  She thought it was the best thing ever!!

Though she normally might not have given cherries a chance, she couldn't pass them up with this cute presentation!

Questions:

  1. Do you like cherries?  What's your favorite way to use them?
  2. Do you ever present your child's food in a fun creative way?  I'd love to hear more ideas!

Well I am from the Cherry capital of the U.S. Traverse City Michigan! So I love love cherries and in T.C. you can find just about any Cherry- flavored, they even put them in burgers. Although I find I love cherries best in wine :) And Kelly you should know next to banana's, cherries are a great post work-out snack because of their anti-inflammatory properties! We are heading back to Michigan in three weeks I will have to send you some Traverse City Cherry Wine for you to try!

Cherry wine? Yes please!! I had no idea TC was famous for cherries. You want to know something weird? I spent a few weeks working at a summer camp in Traverse City, MI in college!! What I remember most is that people LOVED their ice cream there! ha!

Icecream...fudge...microbrew beer...are mostly our favorites! That is crazy you spent the summer there, I miss the bay and water so much. Did you get a chance to visit the vineyards, there are serveral? How about the offical Cherry Fest...I am so excited to be going back home. It truely is a small world~

OH how yummy does that look??? I was the same way with cherries, never really liked them much. Very mushy...

i LOVE cherries! this frozen yogurt looks great! i agree about the ben & jerry's frozen yogurt... it hasn't sold me. at least yet. ;) where did you find that cherry applesauce?

I bought the cherry applesauce at our local Sunflower Market, which I heard just got bought by Sprouts. So hopefully they'll keep carrying it! It's pretty yummy :)

I've been eyeing the cherries lately at the grocery store! I think I have a very similar ice cream/fro yo maker. Love it!

What a wonderful recipe! I love it! I'm going to have to give this one a try!!

Thanks for stopping by and commenting! Let me know what you think if you give the recipe a try :)

I had Greek Frozen Yogurt when I was in Greece and it was AMAZING! I'm a big fan of chobani and would love to try this recipe

I'm a big fan of cherries. We got the best ones ever in Washington State last summer during our honeymoon! TRUE Rainier cherries!
When I got my ice cream maker last year, I made Greek fro-yo all the time. I'll have to bust it out again! I don't like flavored though, so I'll try to make this version using plain.
I've also heard that if you add a little vodka (or other alcohol) it will keep it from getting rock hard...

This is kind of genius in that "ömg, how did I not think of this" kind of way! I've always wished for greek frozen yogurt so this is perfect. I feel like it can even be used as a post workout snack with all that protein. :)

I love your comment :) Thanks Gina for stopping by! I totally agree, this would be perfect for a post-workout summer refuel.

this is awesome!! i just bought fresh cherries and was thinking about making some soft serve maybe with frozen bananas? this sounds great though too ill try it!

I put fruit "kabobs" in my boys lunches using a plastic straw as the stick. Cherries, melons, kiwi and low fat string cheese cut up. Perfect:)

I made it last night but couldnt wait up until it froze so it tonight dessert. I hope it ok...I only had 1 package of chocolate & one package of banana protein powder, so it tasted a "little" weird (I sampled it this morning...LOL)
But I will add the Hershey and milk...with the cherries, hopefully cover the banana taste.
I let you know what hubby thinks.
