Reboot Part 1: Grocery List, Menu, & Cost

First a few confessions.  My hubby said my blog was full of lies (thanks honey)... but what he meant was that I'm never showing you the WHOLE picture.  I'm only showing you the part I want you to see.   I'm not sure what you think about me or my life, but I struggle with the same things you do.  My sink is more often than not full of dishes, waiting for the dishwasher to be unloaded.  Even Babycakes' sink looks like mine! --------------------->      I have hard days at times where I struggle to balance all that's going on in my life.  And sometimes, even with my best intentions, things don't go as planned... like the Twix bar Babycakes got at church for Easter (so much for a sugarless Easter).  I am not perfect.  And I don't do all this (mommyhood, wifehood, accountinghood, and diethood) perfectly.

Ok, now that that's on the table... I would love to share with you the menu, shopping list, and costs associated with the first 5 days of my Reboot.  Again, today I'm starting a 15 day Reboot - 5 days of eating fruits/veggies, followed by 5 days of juicing, followed by 5 days of eating fruits/veggies.  I will document each section separately.  There's not yet much out there as far as shopping lists or costs associated with a Reboot.  So I plan to provide those things here for you.

Rebooting in the real world

The other thing I noticed is that a lot of meal plan / menu suggestions are SUUUUUUUUUUPER time consuming.  I don't know about you, but I don't have 45 minutes to spend on a week day breakfast - just baking some apples!  So, the meal plans I have constructed and developed, keep the same spirit of the original Reboot, but have some modifications, that in my opinion, make them easier to duplicate and easier to accomplish "in the real world".  Mine could be nicknamed, "The Busy Person Reboot."

All my ingredients for the first 5 days cost me $48.72. (So a little under $10/day) I was pretty happy with that.

Day 1:

  • B - Hot Green Tea and Cherry/Apple Bake: 1 cup cherries, 1 apple chopped, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp nutmeg.  Combine & Microwave for 2 minutes until apples are soft.  Sprinkle 1 Tbsp raisins on top.  (UPDATE - They didn't have any cherries at the store: out of season.  So I just used 2 apples instead, and it was delicious!! And the apples were cooked PERFECTLY!!!!! Forget 45 minutes of baking!!!! See pic below.)
  • L - Spinach salad with bell peppers, tomatoes, corn, refried black beans, and roasted red pepper vinegarette
  • D - Stir-fry veggies: Carrots, snow peas, and water chestnuts + small side salad
  • Bedtime - Hot Green Tea

Day 2:

  • B - Pink Kale Juice
  • L - Spinach salad with edamame hummus, avocado, bell peppers, tomatoes & salsa
  • Snack - Bell Peppers & Edamame hummus
  • D - Spaghetti squash with tomato sauce + watermelon
  • Betime - Hot Green Tea

Day 3:

  • B - Maple Baked Apples & Pears: 1 pear, 1 apple, 2 tsp maple syrup, 3 tsp water, 1/4 tsp cinnamon, 1 Tbsp golden raisins.  Combine & Microwave for 2 minutes until apples are soft.
  • L - Leftover spaghetti squash & tomato sauce + watermelon
  • Snack - Garlic Kale Chips
  • D - Sweet potato & carrot "fries": 2 Tbsp olive oil, 1 tsp cumin, 1/4 tsp salt.  Bake 30 min at 425. + Mean Green Juice
  • Bedtime - Hot Green Tea

Day 4:

  • B - Hot Green Tea + Tart Fruit Salad: 1/2 grapefruit, 1 cup pineapple, 1 orange, 2 kiwis.  Dice & enjoy.
  • L - Citrus Kale Salad
  • S - Leftover sweet potato / carrot "fries"
  • D - Baked Zucchini: 2 zucchini, 1/2 onion, 2 plum tomatoes, 2 Tbsp basil, 1/4 cup olive oil, 1 tsp salt.  Bake 30 min at 425.

Day 5:

  • B - Sunset Juice: 1 large sweet potato, 1 carrot, 1 bell pepper, 2 beets, 2 apples, 1 orange.
  • L - Leftover baked zucchini/tomatoes + Leftover citrus kale salad
  • Snack - Carrots, Cucumbers, Bell Peppers dipped in honey mustard
  • D - Salad with corn, avocado, and salsa

**Make sure you HYDRATE!!**

Drink lots of water: 64 - 100 ounces a day!

Download the shopping list for the first 5 days here.

I'll close with one of my favorite pics from Easter - of me and Babycakes.  What a little cutie patootie!!  (And Momma doesn't look half bad either!)

(and here comes the "honest" part... Cutie Patootie Babycakes - who has been a crazy baby for the past week, refusing to take her nap, dumping dogfood all over the floor, and elongating bedtime by an extra hour each night begging me to sleep in her room like we did on that fateful B-vitamin night just nine days ago).

And just for good measure (pun intended), here is my pre-Reboot weigh-in: 173 lbs.

Questions:

  1. Any highlights from your Easter weekend?
  2. Do you need a Reboot from SUGAR????

PS.  I know it's silly, BUT...** Disclaimer - I AM NOT A DOCTOR!!!!  This blog is just documentation about what I am doing for my own weight-loss journey, and is meant to be used only as a reference.  Anyone considering a diet or juice fast should consult their doctor first. **

I signed up for the reboot that starts today. I am having so much trouble getting info from the jointhereboot website...I hope you don't mind if I look over your shoulder and follow along. :) I am not the perfect mother either, but my four children survived my imperfections. They are adults now; waiting for me to grow up! Vegetables and Fruits here I come!

I would love for you to look over my shoulder for the Reboot, Sherry! Yeah - I've found their website to be soooooooooooo slow and hard to navigate. So hopefully this blog will give you the extra resources you need. I plan on compiling a Reboot "tab" up at the top that will have links to all the grocery lists, facts about Rebooting, recipes, etc... (one of these days!)

I'm so excited that I found you 'girl's...I'm such a 'whimp' when it comes to staying focused and being brave enough...
Watched the "fat, sick & n.d." months ago...(rewatched every chance got) and I've only managed to progressTOWAARDS a juice fast (REboot) but not yet DO IT! Like you, Kelly...Sugar was my big craving...and well, OK...buttered English muffins, etc. and Dairy.....I now, only have/buy almond or coconut milk...and don't even use that much...
I still buy greek yougurt and organic everything. I've replaced sugar w/raw honey...but find I don't use it except occasionally, like in iced tea. I stopped salting almost any veggies.....or sparingly...and tossed out all the favorite dressings I had used all my life on a weekly basis...w/my 'diet salads'..HA!
There's no bread in my kitchen anymore, except glluten free flax-flat bread...?crackers.....which is saying a lot for me.
Anyway...I was happy to read Sherry's little note............................Ditto here...kids grown, downsized from the big house to the little townhouse/condo....and STILL, w/out all that Kelly manages around her 'REBOOT", I struggle............(not enough feedback accountability from my two hounds ;-) Being 147lbs most of my life
except for that 20's phase of 125...'pre kids'..............I now weigh 222 and I'm 5'9"....but, Sick of this fat and fatigue...
So.................I'm copying down your SUPERduper hints and helps and RECIPES......and aiming at my REBOOT,
for this SAT after my 61st birthday......................in spite of all the 'local' negative feedback and scoffing I'm getting .
I'm advised by Joe's site to do the 15day/5on/5off like you're doing..Kelly...............Keep up your excellent blog ...
You are an INSPIRATION! (Now if I can just learn how to navigate this new laptop, find Pinterest, and understand facebook better............low tech in Dublin, Ohio.....;-U Sue

Babycakes Easter dress is sooooo cute. You both look very pretty!

You gotta love Target :)

I started the 10-30 day reboot in march. I did really good for 10 days and lost 8 ish lbs. after that I kinda started to cheat in between but still did my juicing(smoothie-Ing) I bought a high end juicer and with my experience I decided take it back and get a high end blender instead! I did well for a couple more days after that and then last week I toook a half break. I still made my green smoothies and ate tons of veggies, but I also had some b-day cake & Easter candy. I maintained my weight during this time. Today I have started strictly back on the smoothie/whole, raw veggies. Maybe we can motivate each other to stay strong!? I know I need it! It's really hard when you have 4 little kids and a hubby to cook for! They like to try my smoothies, but they also want "normal" food. Good luck to you! It does get easier the longer you go. It has become more of a lifestyle for me. I just have to make sure I don't add all the sweet & savory extras until I reach my goal weight. I'm about 40lbs away! I can't wait to see how well you do!!! Thanks, Bethany

Thanks for the encouragement, Bethany! I can't wait to see our results!!!

Hi Bethany,
I just wanted to tell you that I smiled reading your comment....all sooooooooo true...and helpful for me to see.
We MUST for sure inspire and support each other.......makes the whole thing a lot more fun and healthy. I had a birthday around Easter and lots of other APRIL dates (my hubbies funeral, our anniversary, etc..all hard not to crave comfort food thru) but,............this really is a LIFEstyle change and a WHOLE new way of living that before we, well I...only dabbled in and
never did seriously enough. (I even feel now..with what I'm learning...that I could've saved my husband and healed his heart problems w/these REALfood, raw food, fruit and veggies daily changes ;-( if I'd been more aware then)
So...........don't give up...Hang in............and don't forget the 'movement' part...
That's why I (for me) keep rewatching The DVD (F<S<N<D) to refresh the methods and techniques they used....remember the truck driver started walking for 5 minutes...then swimming...then longer walks..etc. I think added to rebooting, getting back into moving around daily ( to work up a little sweat) is what's making the difference.....Not that you younger moms aren't working your selves ragged daily w/house, kids, husband....But,
I remember being a total "headless chicken" whirlwind back when (w/all that)....and still gaining weight..thru surgeries and then menopause....because I ran around ragged all day...but never got a good nite's rest....and rarely went to the gym for very long.............I always believed doing laundry and ironing at midnite, etc. that I was 'burning' calories.....Now we know the opposite is true.......You're really making 'cortisol' and bad fat...or whatever. Hindsight!
I just bought a 'grandma' bike w/no gears and big baskets and have started riding to the rec ctr....to use the weight room.
and the indoor pool (where no one can see me ;->) I'm determined to get my body back and I can tell you and Kelly are too. ..............Keep strong...;-B Sue

Hi Kelly,

I love your ideas! Thanks - and it looks like you and I are in the same boat, except my babycakes is a boy and he'll be 2 on June 24th! You look great and a true inspiration. Your menu is meant to replace the meals and not the inbetween juice - is that correct? How much water are you drinking a day?

I weighed in this a.m. and I'm at an even 212 - I can't wait to be back in the 100's! I'm hoping two weeks from today I'll see that magical 199 number. I appreciate your insight and help!

Hi Cathy!
These are the meals for the first 5 days of the Reboot which focuses on eating only fruits and veggies (with some juices)... this prepares your body and leads you into the juicing only portion, which will be an additional 5 days. I will be posting menu, shopping list, and cost for that section in a couple days. This plan (above) is just another variation from the original on the jointhereboot site. I only plan to eat what is listed above for the next 5 days. I hope that helps answer your question!! If you still need further info, let me know :)
So glad you're joining me on this journey!!!

Beautiful Easter pic!! $10/day is pretty awesome. You are soo organized!! I love it. And I know what you mean about not showing the whole picture on your blog... Lol. Funny!

Thanks for sharing all of this! I had a hard time with the reboot website, too, so I'm glad to see this. I'm trying to decide if I should tag along on your reboot this week. I don't have all the ingredients though & have already grocery shopped & meal planned for this week. I can't wait to see the results you get from the reboot!

You could start next week, and have everything all laid out for you - with updates on what works and tastes best. :) And I'll still be Rebooting, so you'll still have that extra motivation!!

I was wanting to start a reboot and planned to do my shopping yesterday not realizing everything would be closed due to Easter! So I decided to postpone by one day - i'm so glad I did. I was having trouble w/ the website also.
Some recipes were to complicated or hard to find! You came to my resuce and I will pretend we are doing this together. I am on my way to the store w/ your recipe list. My awesome hubby is doing this with me so I doubled the recipe! Thanks again!!!

Perfect timing :) (Yeah - I totally forgot the date of Easter when I planned/scheduled my Reboot... so I just had veggies yesterday while everyone else devoured Easter ham. Ha!) Good luck on your Reboot and let me know how these first 5 days go for you!!

No worries :) I think we all kind of tend to post about the perks of our days-- I mean WHO wants to remember the bad stuff anyway!?

If I posted every time Popcorn feels excluded when nobody pays attention to him, I'm pretty sure that's ALL I'd write about haha!

Haha! Thx for the encouragement Brittany!

yaaaaaayyyyy! OK, so I told you I actually bought a juicer. However, I had a little mini breakdown the other night (kind of in line w/ juggling too many things and not wanting to fight this battle too) and I was on the Reboot site, which is RIDICULOUS and I had convinced myself that I just did NOT have the time to do this and I was about to pack it up. WELL, this post has completely changed my mind. I am so excited! I'm doing it. May not start tomorrow. But I'm keeping the juicer and tackling this ON MONDAY! I'm going to use this week to wean off even more sugar (yesterday was disasterous). Whoo hoo! Seriously, thanks for doing this blog - I LOVE it. And by the way, I think it's pretty dang honest. Gotta get on top of posting some Katie pics on FB, your's are adorable.

I think your plan sounds fantastic!! Success is ALL about the prep. And I think it's best to start on a Monday, so that you start your juice days on the weekend. Thx for the nice words about the blog too - I love it and love sharing... so it makes it so rewarding when others find it useful or inspirational ... or BOTH :)

Kelly, I just wanted to congratulate you on your success with the reboot and this blog. I tried to leave a comment on the Reboot website, but kept getting an error message each time I'd submit the comment.

It's amazing how just making one decision totally changes everything. You have a beautiful family, you're leading this amazing healthy lifestyle and now inspiring others with this blog.

Congratulations!!!

Patty

It all feels so good - to be making progress and to be inspiring others! Living the sweet life!!

I don't see the recipe - do you make your own? Sounds yummy!!!

I buy the edamame hummus at the local Sprouts Market. I have a pic of the brand and packaging on the Homemade V8 blogpost... but maybe I'll look at the ingredient list and come up with my own recipe to share :)

Great post! I'm going to be joining you!! I'm so glad I found your blog.. I've been reading over all your posts, and I'm so motivated and inspired! Yay for Rebooting!!!!

Glad you're motivated and inspired :) Let me know if you have any questions along the way!

I can't get this shopping list to load. I would appreciate it if you would email it to me. Like others above, I am new to this concept and finding the join the reboot website very frustrating. Will enjoy following your progress. Plan to start our first reboot in May. Gathering information for now and buying a juicer.

Never mind...changed computers and it worked fine. Thanks

I am thinking it might be because the document is a .docx file (newest version of Word), and your other computer might be running Office 97. I was going to resave it down into the older version and see if that helped... but glad you got it working! Happy shopping :)

I just wanted to say THANK YOU for sharing all your recipes and making the reboot Im about to do seem more feasable. I was looking at the ever-so-slow Join The Reboot page and it is a very supportive place there but you really broke it down into english I can understand. Its awesome that you are 50+ lbs off. You will be MY inspiration, as I want to be 50+lbs off too. Love the pics also. I have already bookmarked you and started following you on Pinterest. You are a life saver :) Thanks again...hope you dont mind me hanging out here sometimes.

I'm sorry I haven't commented back sooner! How are things going? Have you started a Reboot? What recipes have you enjoyed the most?

My husband and I are planning to start the 10 day reboot next Mon (May 14th) and I've had such a hard time finding information on it. The reboot website is so screwy! Thank you so much for this information! We've printed out your recipes for Days 1-5 as well as the shopping list and we are going shopping this weekend. You rock! I'll check back in soon to "hear" some further updates. Thank you again! :)

I'm sorry I haven't commented back sooner! How are things going? What did you think of the Reboot? What recipes have you enjoyed the most? Are you seeming some results? Do you feel happier and healthier? :)

I love your website!
I want to try your reboot...sounds better than a fast...more do-able.
I see there are only 5 days each week...so what do you do on the weekends?
Thanks for your diligence in sharing...esp the pictures :)

Glad you're enjoying the blog! I just called them "weeks" for ease of use. But really, you just do the first 5 days, then the second, then the third for a total of 15 days. Don't do anything different "on the weekends". Does that make sense? Like I said, I think the biggest benefit is getting your body "off sugar" and adding in all those yummy veggies. Let me know how it goes!!

Hi! New here and just found your blog 2 days ago. I was so inspired by your weight-loss story that the night I found your blog, I printed out your shopping list, bought the groceries for Reboot days 1-5 and bought the cheap juicer at Walmart that you suggested! I, too, have struggled with weight gain all of my life. Gained 10 lbs each summer from middle-high school and since I got married 12.5 years ago, I've gained 50 lbs. Usually, after the birth of my 4 kids (I was sick all 9 months of each pregnancy, so I gained weight after, not during). I stepped on the scale day 1 and I'm weighing in at 185! (scale says 180, but I think it's 5lbs off). I would LOVE to be back at my pre-married days of 140, but would love even more to be at my "healthy" weight of 125. I'm short, too, so that makes all the fat look worse :-( I'm on day 2 of the reboot and it's been fairly easy so far. Not too many sugar cravings yet. We'll see how I'm doing during week 2! Congrats again on your success story!!

How'd the weekend go for you? Usually days 3 - 4 are the hardest. I hope it goes really well for you!!

Thanks for checking in! I'm on day 3 now and so far so good. I actually commented to my husband last night that I felt full and was not hungry at the end of the day. I'm hoping I can continue with it. AND, wouldn't you know it, but hubs came home with 2 DOZEN doughnuts from Krispy Kreme last night and so far, I've managed to not eat any! I'm hoping they hurry up and leave my house...I'm very tempted, but keep telling myself it's mind over matter!

AND - since you've been eating mostly fruits/veggies and just juice for a week or so, you would probably feel really sick to your stomach if you ate that sugar-y donut. So stay strong!!!

Can you tell me how you made the Garlic Kale Chips? I didn't see them in the recipes list. Thanks!

Kale Chips

Ingredients:
1 bunch of kale
1 tsp olive oil (or cooking spray)
sprinkle with sea salt
1/2 tsp garlic
1 tsp nutritional yeast

Bake for 20 minutes at 300.

Let me know what you think!

What a time saver you are for me! I just discovered this post and how perfect it is. I was trying to sift through the reboot website to come up with a shopping list and how much it would cost and voila! Hit the easy button and came to your blog :). Interestingly enough, I discovered your blog and Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead right around the same time but separately. Funny how that worked out :)

I was wondering how you manage for 15 days if you have to go out to eat? I have work related meals to attend. I could probably plan not to do this during the 5 day juice only but for the veggie and fruit days can I eat a spinach salad with only other vegetables and no dressing while out? Do you cook for your husband and child during this time or do they eat the same thing at home? Since coming across your blog I have dramatically decreased sugar and also artificial sweetner. Would love any practical ideas. Love your blog and have made many recipes!

It's definitely hard to plan around work related meals. You have the right idea though. A salad with fresh raw veggies/fruit would be a great option. Try to stay away from all dairy and meat during those first (and last) 5 days as you prepare for the juice only section. As for cooking...yes, I prepared meals for DH and Babycakes. My tip for that is to make the meals similar. On a day when I'm eating spaghetti squash and tomato sauce, I make them a pasta-based meal. On a day that I'm eating a "mexican salad" with corn, tomatoes, avocado... I'll make them tacos. So at least the smells are similar :) On the juice only part, I juice first and then cook for them, sipping my juice along the way so I'm not TOO tempted. So glad you found the blog and are enjoying it!!

How big are the portions for your meals? I'm trying to get my health in order and want to ensure that I'm serving the right portions. Could you elaborate on the portion size?

Thanks!

Thanks for your blog! I want to make some of these juices. Do you have a link with the recipes somewhere? I cant seem to find on from this page. :(

You can find all the Juice Recipes here: http://nosugarsweetlife.com/content/recipe-list (which is also a tab at the top of all pages). I'm not sure why they're not clickable within the post itself...I may have to go back and update the links or something. Sorry about that! Let me know if you have further questions!

I also updated the links!

I just started to try and compile a shopping list for the reboot and I'm loving that you have this information out there! It's going to make things so much easier for me starting out! THANK YOU!!

Your plan seems more realistic and attainable when it comes to time I can commit to this. I'm going to buy my juicer and start on this. Real life question: What did your husband do for dinner while you were rebooting for these two weeks? I typically cook for both of us- did you still do the cooking for him and babycakes? Did he cook more for himself during this time?

I worry about his health as much as my own, and I don't want him to subsist on spaghetti with meat sauce and fast food while I'm doing this, but I also know that I don't want to spend a lot of time cooking meals that I won't be eating. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Hello! I just found you & the blog. I can not even begin to tell you how HAPPY I am to have found this specific post and everything else!! My husband and I bought our juicer in mid-July and then proceeded to burn through... oh about $150 worth of veggies that we primarily fed the kitchen sink :( We were so excited to get juicing and start our reboot, but we were also so not prepared for the green bitterness in our cups. You are absolutely right about not having 45 minutes to make breakfast on a weekday morning!! I don't even spend that much time on the weekends for breakfast. I have been juicing, usually once per day but I seem to prefer fruits and veggies over greens. I am printing this out and we are going to work with this to get a jump on things. Can't wait!! Thanks :)
