7 Low Sugar Tips Anyone Can Adopt

First, I'd like to reiterate something I said yesterday on Facebook. If you're not yet a fan, go ahead and "like" me because there's lots of additional conversations, photos, and questions that never make it on to the actual blog! I started a devotional plan yesterday - 35 days of a bit of Bible plus a story / message that goes along with it. I've "wanted" to be a consistent reader (of the Bible) in the past, but haven't made it a habit. Then I started questionning myself on whether I should even sign up because it'd probably be too much and in a week I'd be behind, and then I'd just feel bad. But then I read the first day's message which was all about not worrying about tomorrow and living for today. Which made me think about weightloss and the healthy happy life I'm trying to achieve.
Which brings me to what I wrote on FB:
Do you ever get overwhelmed (like I do) thinking about all you have to do over the next few days/weeks/months to accomplish your weightloss goal (or savings goal, or reading plan, or ...). STOP. Just focus on today. Make good choices TODAY that will help you get there! Stop worrying about tomorrow and the week after that and the month after that. Which brings me to today's post, with some practical tips you can adopt that will help you reduce your daily sugar intake TODAY.
7 tips on how to reduce your Sugar Intake:
1. Read Labels. I went to my local market recently and was shocked appalled to see the following ingredients when I flipped around a can of Sweet Kernel Corn: Corn, Sugar. Seriously?!? "They" need to make sweet corn SWEETER by adding sugar? That's just wrong. Luckily I found a similar can without the added sugar. But if I hadn't checked, I easily would have bought the can with extra sugar. The hard part is that EVERYTHING has sugar in it these days! Bread, ketchup, CORN, peanut butter. You name it, it probably has sugar. So be diligent to check the labels. Find lower sugar versions (not that just have an alternate sugar like sucralose or asparthame, but that actually have LESS of ANY sweetener). Another example... bbq sauce. I looked at probably 12 different brands/flavors comparing sugar content and finally decided on one with half the sugar grams: Stubb's Hickory Bourbon (7g of sugar per 2 Tbsp, compared with 15g+ in most other brands). It was a bit more tangy than the sweet honey bbq sauce Dear Hubby was used to, but overall we liked it.

2. Rethink Dessert. I don't know what it is about Americans, but we feel we DESERVE dessert. I'm not really sure why. We feel we are not really "living life" or are depriving ourselves unjustly if we go without dessert, even for one day. Oh I'll diet, but I still need Cheesecake. Oh I'm overweight, but let me have more ice cream before bed. Newsflash people, you don't NEED dessert. Go ahead and hate me now, but it's true. Your life would be just as good without it. How do I know? Because mine has been! I went almost 6 months without having a real "dessert", even subbing fruit and a yogurt cream sauce out for traditional cake at my birthday festivities. I'm not saying never have dessert, or that you need to do it exactly like I did. But do we really need dessert every day? Do we really need to celebrate every birthday and holiday with candy, sweets, pies, cookies, cakes, and ice cream? Another example... these cupcakes at the Blend Retreat (shown below thanks to Lauren). Everyone raved about them; I passed. I can honestly say, my life is just as good now (2 months later) having NOT eaten them than had I eaten the extra sugar. No difference. Did I deserve them? Maybe. I was going to be doing some major hiking the next day. Did I need them? No.

3. Substitute. This is my favorite way to cut added sugar. Substitute greek yogurt and bananas in breads to reduce the amount of sugar needed to sweeten them. Substitute sliced tomatoes and drizzled mustard on a burger instead of sugar-filled ketchup. Substitute sliced fresh strawberries on a pb&j instead of sugar-filled jelly. You get the idea :)

4. Watch what you drink. Whew. So many drinks these days are LOADED with sugar! Some "juices" only contain 5% actual juice! Say what?! Beware my friends. Beware. Sugar-y drink habit #1 to kick: sodas - both regular AND diet. I would say aim for once a month or less, but at that point you probably won't even want it anymore b/c it will taste so syrup-y and unhealthy. Wean yourself... 2 a day, down to 1 a day, down to 1/2 a day, down to none. Aim for drinking mostly water, some unsweet teas - green and black, some fresh veggies juices, some milk or almond milk, and maybe coffee (though that dang creamer needs to go!). Supposedly there's a "good" recipe for making your own flavored creamers sweetened with dates..but I haven't mustered up the courage to try it yet. It seems sooooooo tedious!
5. Prepare by bringing healthy snacks. Don't let your office make you fat! Plan ahead. Bring hummus or nuts/seeds or greek yogurt or toast with peanut butter or kale chips... anything for that afternoon pick-me-up that is NOT candy!

6. Reboot - train your body to need less sugar. The more sugar you consume, the more your body wants it. Similarly, the less sugar you consume, the less your body wants it. Reboot your body into craving fruits, veggies, and healthy foods. That's what was so beneficial for me to do a juice reboot. I retrained myself not to want/need sweets.

7. Reward yourself differently. Don't reward yourself (or others) with food/sweets. Reward yourself with other things: a manicure, a new book, a trip to the movies, a new workout shirt, or even a photoshoot (like I did after losing over 50 lbs)!

great great post! i did the same thing with the bbq sauce the other day at the store! i also ended up with the stubb's brand. :) one thing that i've really cut back on is flavored yogurts (greek yogurt too!). i know the protein content is great, but there's a lot of extra sugar in those babies. i try to keep them for "treats" every once in awhile.
I know -- i hate that there's
I know -- i hate that there's so much sugar in Greek yogurt sometimes. I'm always thinking I need to find away to eat the plain!! Lol. Hasn't worked yet. But it has made choose eggs instead sometimes.
yogurts...mmmm :)
Yes, plain is better. I like using the plain mixed with salsa for a dipping sauce or even taco salad "dressing." And I've been sticking the fruit Chobanis in the freezer for a "frozen yogurt" treat on the weekends for me and Babycakes. Yum!
Plain mixed with fruit
I like the plain greek yogurt ok, but I love taking a fresh apricot or strawberries and combining with plain yogurt. Granola is a good mixture, too!
Awesome. I need to add your
Awesome. I need to add your blog page on my facebook. I love additional conversations. Lol. And i totally agree with the low sugar tips. I love what you said about your life is JUST AS GOOD a few months later even though you didn't have that cupcake. And you can live without it!! The longest I've gone is probably a month, but you can totally do it!!! I hate bananas but they are a good sweetness substitute in baking/smoothies. Greek yogurt too!!! And you have to read the labels. I used to just look at calories, but I learned my lesson on sugar this year!!
And I love the new "your ad
And I love the new "your ad here"!!!!! Those are actually really cute. I hope you become a filthy rich blogger and I was one of your first readers!! Lol. Seriously!
Thanks and Ha!
Glad you like the ads. You could always get one :) I'm going to do an ad on my friend Gina's site next month... super excited about it!
I'm not really dreaming of becoming a filthy rich blogger, just hoping to cover a few blog-related costs like hosting and bandwidth and such :)
Sugar mama
Great tips, Kelly- and I definitely agree that Americans eat way too much sugar in general. I definitely have a sweet tooth- but have found tons of healthy substitutions that satisfy my cravings.
And you're right- you don't HAVE to have dessert- but it's also OKAY to have dessert. I can justify having a scoop of REAL FULL FAT ice cream or a small cupcake, because I know that the other 99% of what I eat is clean and healthy. I don't think there's anything wrong with having a little dessert every once in a while- and I think it's actually a good thing. I have found that if I deny myself too much, I get bitter, and then go way overboard when I have the "real" thing. It's definitely all about moderation.
Luckily for me, most of the foods I WANT to eat are not sugar-laden, because I know how they make me feel. And I'm a big fan of PLAIN yogurt- and adding my own fruit. :)
A solution to the coffee dilemma
Use actual cream! Or half & half if you're a calorie counter. But those "non-dairy creamers" scare me... I'll stick to real food, thanks. :) Oh, and "100% fruit juice"? Just say no. It's pretty much extracted fructose with the beneficial fiber tossed away.
These are really great tips, thank you! My husband and i have actually selected that same bbq sauce before, so we're on the same page. We also looove a little piece of dark chocolate after dinner. It has very little sugar and a whole slew of health benefits.
Thanks, Stephanie!
Yeah, I actually just bought my first thing of half & half YESTERDAY :) Not only does it NOT have the sugar that the regular "creamers" have, it was also like half the price! Cha-ching times 2!!!
hidden sugar and HFCS.
Another place I've found lots of hidden sugar - spaghetti sauce! I found one brand that didn't have any extra sugar but I can't remember off the top of my head what it was. The other thing I try to look out for is high fructose corn syrup (hfcs). This week I've been trying to eat only things that I bought in the produce section. Keeps me safe from hidden no-no's.
agreed!!
Don't even get me STARTED on HFCS!!!!! Look out for that first, then lookout for sugar :) And I so agree - shop the produce section and natural whole foods, and you don't have to worry about added sugar!
Tell me about it!
A few years ago, I discovered corn was causing the migraines I had been having. It is sooo hard to find products without corn in them! On the plus side, I pretty much have to eat whole foods to stay migraine free :)
Rewarding with food is a HUGE NO NO
I hear my friends say it all the time after a workout or a long day, I deserve this, I worked hard. I'm like youre not a dog.
:)
Indeed. I have to tell that to my daughter too... who thinks it's "cute" to try to drink water from the doggie bowls. ICK!
Just found your blog! Love it
Just found your blog! Love it. Pinned just about every recipe you've ever made. Can't wait to try the lemon broccoli chicken using lemon chobani. So smart, never would of thought of that!
Excellent!
So glad you found me Steph :) Pin away! (Make sure to check out the full Recipe List at the top of the blog too to find even more yummy recipes!)
Great Tips
I already emailed my favorite store asking them for more healthy store brand canned goods hopefully (no sugar, less salt) since they are still a growing chain they will listen and provide better choices, and I agree even the FF 1/2 and 1/2 is 20 calories per 2 TBSP, I have now switched to Blue Diamond unsweetened Vanilla Almond milk in my coffee, now it tastes like a fancy coffee house drink, and this morning I had some left in my cup that got cold, that was really yummy, may have to make some ice cubes and then blend into my own custom Frappe'. Congrats on the Foodgawker positioning, next stop FOOD NETWORK!
I like it!
I like your action! Yes, I was at my favorite local market when the "Corn fiasco" happened. And it was their natural foods store brand that had the added sugar. OY! I also like your suggestion to try the Vanilla Almond milk in the coffee. I saw that they have an "unsweetened" variety on their website last week, but haven't looked for it at the store yet. Will look for it this weekend! AND thanks for your support and enthusiasm! Maybe I should have you be my blog rep :) Do you have any contacts at the Food Network?! :p
Food Network :(
I wish I had a contact over there, I would so recommend you, I have been watching bits and pieces of new FN star, sometimes seems like worse cooks in america episodes, can't believe some of their skills. Well I am rooting for Alton's team just because he is the only host I watch regularly, I love the science of it all, na Garten is another Fav but I have seen all her re-runs. Keep on bloggin' love your recipes
unsweetened Vanilla Almond milk
I found it this afternoon!!! So excited to try it in my coffee tomorrow morning!
Agree!
I totally agree with you!! I try to cut back on sugar wherever I can! If I want a sugary treat, I reach for fruit! I've learned to adapt my life on limiting my sweets. If I need something sweetened like coffee I use Stevia! I love it!
Thx for stopping by!
Really good, in season fruit, is sooooooooo sweet!! My daughter and I ate a big pint of fresh strawberries yesterday that were amazing! A perfect pool snack break :)
Love all these tips. I'm a
Love all these tips. I'm a substitute queen :) I think I've literally become incapable of making a recipe with substituting at least 1 thing for a healthier version. I cringe at the thought of traditional recipes now.
*without* not with!
*without* not with!
cringing
I cringed when I saw a cookie recipe with 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of butter, and 1/2 cup of oil in it... then I substituted, substituted, and substituted... and ended up with glorified homemade dog biscuits :) Oops!
I used to drink Coke Zero
I used to drink Coke Zero every day. It's not sugar, but artificial sweeteners aren't good for us either. I love bubbles in my drinks so I switched to unsweetened, flavored sparkling waters, such as La Croix or Canada Dry.
Nice Switch!
I've been doing a lot of unsweet tea, but should try some of the bubbly waters for a change of pace :)
Tips
These are great tips...I am a substitute queen too...I am ALWAYS modifying recipes!! I just found your blog and I am excited to have another Denver based healthy living blogger (I am at lizashlee.com)! I just moved to Denver in late April...excited to follow you! Have a great night!
Welcome!
Welcome to Denver AND No Sugar Sweet Life :) I hope you find that both surpass your expectations!
No Sugar Never Sounded So Good!
I really have to commend you, Kelly. When I read your posts, I sometimes think about how healthy your little girl is and will continue to be as she grows. What a gift you are giving her by giving her such a healthy and well-rounded start. After all, we are what we eat! And how lucky is she that she won't grow up wired to eat sugar and fast food like so many other kids. It's so inspiring to have you lead by example!
Thanks, JoAnna!
Thanks for your sweet words :) Babycakes is the reason I got healthy. A sudden realization that I was solely responsible for every bite of food going in her little mouth... I wanted her to have the best possible start, the best possible life, and the best possible relationship with her body. Good food/health is so important!!
I will repost...this what I do too! New drink!
I have a great drink you may want to share with your readers that is 'the bomb' and almost no calories, very healthy and refreshing!! I will let you know. Love all you said while I have no time to write it so I will re-post this. We make very specific choices when we shop. We are healing from a bone marrow transplant after all. Good for you on staying home, I love it and have never looked back....so will you!

Welcome, and glad you found me! I don't post on the weekends, but have a great new post ready for tomorrow, so be sure to check back :)
I NO LONGER feel alone! :)
I love your blog!! Started my blog January 2012 to fight my sugar addiction and called it, Toss the Sugar (Fitness) to remind me of what has literally courted me for years successfully... From 175 pounds I am now around 135-140 and have kept it there by paying close attention to my sugar intake... I strongly believe it is one of the biggest culprits of obesity as it is addicting (of course, being human and our personal choices add to that) --- Anyway, just feel great to find you online! <3 Katrina, Toss the Sugar Fitness on Facebook (by that, of course, I mean processed sugar)
I like your tips. When I was
I like your tips. When I was a teenager I read "Sugar Blues" and decided to give up sugar for a year, I felt so much better when I gave up that poison. Now I have kids and I am having the hardest time kickin the sugar habit, I am thin, but I have a hard time giving up sugar like I did when I was a teenager.
I saved your blog to my favorites and hope to try some of your recipes. I am jucing with a Belville juicer and hoping to get off my 7 mgs of prednisone like the man in the documentary.
Inspiring!
Great simplistic and motivational ideas. I love the idea of starting with the reboot, even if your "reboot" is something less intense, just to give your body that clean slate. Also how you tied in the Biblical standpoint. What better motivation for your body than the Bible! Thanks for your blog, it was great to stumble upon! :-)
Awesome! Love these tips.
