Happy National Running Day!

Yesterday was National Running Day! (I actually didn't know until I saw the bajillion blog posts about it...heh).  But I shall celebrate none-the-less even if I'm a day late. I still don't/won't call myself a "runner"... but I am getting into the habit of running, slowly but surely.  It all started with the lovely Corrie Anne.  If you missed her guest post, be sure to go back and read it.  As I said, I was immediately drawn to her quirky personality and humor, complete love for fitness, and her sickeningly sweet relationship with her hubby. :) And she was a great encourager and reached out to me when I commented on her blog about potentially starting to run.  It is something she is passionate about, so she had some great suggestions on how to get started. I searched back and found our comment exchange from March 12th!

And for some reason, I actually listened to her advice and started slowly through the Couch to 5K plan.  It really does ease you into it, so each step along the way feels doable.  Now I can run for 20, even 30, even 40 minutes without stopping.  I consider that quite an accomplishment!  And the even weirder thing (to me) is that I actually look forward to going.  I still don't go every day - just because my life is so overflowing with stuff/activities/obligations... I don't feel I can make the time EVERY day.  But I feel good about the 2 - 3 days a week that I am going.

Here's a pic of me gettin' my run on this past weekend!

Top 10 things I like about Running:

  1. I like that I can do it right out of my door - and don't have to drive anywhere to work-out.
  2. I like that I can bring Babycakes with me - she loves going for a ride in the jogging stroller! And it's fun to end at the park and have a "reward" for her too - no wonder she gets excited when momma says: "let's go jogging!"
  3. I like that I can push myself as much or as little as I want.
  4. I like that I can see progress in how far I can run without stopping or how fast I am doing it.
  5. I like that I can change things up by taking different routes (and that I can keep track of mileage & speed with RunKeeper on my phone... I LOVE technology!)
  6. I like that I get to wear cool purple shoes... ha! No seriously, I like that.
  7. I like that I am building up my endurance / heart rate / cardiovascular health.
  8. I like that I am teaching Babycakes what "regular" exercise looks like.
  9. I like that I sort of get in "a groove" and all of a sudden, a lot of distance is covered, and I'm closer to my goal/destination.
  10. As a mom, I like that for 30 minutes, Babycakes is contained, content, and happy... and I don't have to chase her all around the house or worry she's getting into something she shouldn't.  It's like an Elmo DVD, but waaaaaaaaay better for both of us :)

Here's a new favorite quote of mine:

I love that.  I am living that.  I am so excited that my 31st year has been my best yet.  I love who I am becoming, I love this journey that I'm on, and I love that you're here with me.  Hearing about how I've inspired you to do something new, to cook a new meal, to try a new healthy food, to drink veggie juice, to get healthier and happier... makes it all the sweeter.

Here's a reader photo from a meal she recently made healthier w/Chobani.  She said: "Dear Chobani- I'm inspired by No Sugar Sweet Life to cook with your yogurt! Tonight my potato salad just got healthier with Plain Chobani, tsp of yellow mustard, tsp of light agave nectar, tsp of dried celery, 1/2 tsp of dill, 1/2 tsp of parsley, dash of pepper & salt! Yum~"  This makes my heart so happy :)

Questions:

  • Do you run? If so, what do you like about it? If not, what do you dislike?
  • Have you subsitituted Greek Yogurt into any of your favorite meals? How'd it turn out?

You should definitely be proud of yourself, Kelly!!
I have a weird relationship with running. When I first got interested in working out, it was my passion (I feel like it's that way for a lot of people). I ran 5ks, 8ks, 10ks and a half marathon, and always had 2-3 races coming up. Then I just kind of got burnt out. It causes A LOT of stress on your body- and for me- it actually made me gain weight (which I know I'm not alone in). I think it's different though if you're sticking to like 5 miles and under for runs. I know that a lot of people also get really obsessive about running- more so than a lot of other exercises.
For me now, I love to run when it "calls to me." And that usually means that I run a few miles with one of my dogs, or go trail run for an hour and just lose myself. I think running can be GREAT- but again- I think it's something that has a fine line of "good for you" and "obsessive."

Yeah, I'm not obsessed! Nor do I think I ever will be. I'm just not a "I LOVE EXERCISE" person, like, ahem, you are :) And I don't think I'll ever be that either. So, I might stretch to a 10K every once in awhile, like once a year or something, but I mostly plan to have it encompass a couple workouts a week for some good cardio. I want to also incorporate more intervals into my runs. I think Lindsay @ Lean Green Bean does a lot of good "shorter" runs/exercises mixed in with her other exercising. **The other thing I didn't mention is that running is nice b/c Babycakes is contained for 30 minutes - I don't have to chase her around. We both have fun and benefit from it. It's like putting on an Elmo DVD for distraction, but better for both of us :) I can't do that with any other type of exercise!

Can I be your first Colorado training client? Because I need some serious help/motivation with the strength training and toning!

I used to hate to run. Hated everything about it - because I was FORCED to do it for sports. But once I stopped playing organized sports and could run however long - however fast - and wherever I wanted.. i Began to LOVE it. I like it because it allows me to destress.. and I do some of my deepest reflection while running! :)

Ha!! Exactly! I love that quote. I started running because I got a surprise of having to teach a class of high schoolers... so not my thing. It was my last class of the day and the classroom management drove me crazy --- running saved the day! :)

You used running to destress after crazy classroom mgmt... I just quit teaching instead. #maybeIshould'verun

But I am not. I start going crazy after about 15 minutes of it, and I find it really hard to stay focused. I've slowly trying to build up my time though. I'd rather do a tape or lift weights.

You may find if/when you have kids, that 15 minutes of quiet running wins - when you can't do a video b/c you have a toddler begging for your every ounce of attention... or worse, being too quiet b/c she's in to something naughty!

i love finding broccoli at the farmers market almost more than any other vegetable for some reason. so fun!

I'm excited b/c the farmers' market closest to our house opens this weekend - every Sunday through Sept!!

Awwa!! That's me!!! I'm so happy you're loving running!! I've always loved how portable it is, and I definitely love tracking it!! That's so awesome that you're being such a good example for your daughter! It totally works. My parents have always been a good example for me of the whole range of benefits of running. They look super young and they always say how much it de-stresess them. I love those side benefits!! I would love potato salad with yogurt -- I HATE mayo. Yuck! So I usually avoid potato salads other people make!

Thanks again for making running seem attainable. I'm so glad I found you when I did :)

Well since I have been running for 20 years I guess you could say I love running! However, it is easy to get burned out. I have realized how important it is to cross train now. I used to always run 6 days a week every week for years. Once I started having kids it was hard to get out and run every day, especially in the winter. Now some weeks I only run once or twice a week but I feel great because I have done other workouts.

Yes, I think I'm going to focus on balance - using running a couple days a week interspersed with other exercises.

Running and I have a love hate relationship but I know the great benefits it has brought to be over the past two years or so. I've had asthma since I was a preteen. I hated P.E. class for the exact reason that I could never run a full lap without having to stop because I felt an attack coming on. Once I hit 22, I got myself a super motivational trainer and VOILA she got me to running. Slow and steady was the policy and after a few months of conditioning, I was running! I love just knowing that I can run 15-20mins nonstop and not feel like my heart is going to burst from my chest or that my lungs are tensing up!

Oh and I forgot to mention that I don't use an inhaler anymore either!

That's so awesome!!! Thank you so much for sharing your story/experience!

Good for you on the running. I keep trying to get back into it, but I seem to keep hurting myself. I think I may need to stick to biking :)

I love that photo of Babycakes; it's too sweet! Great job on the running! I love that I'm a "slow" runner because I'm ALWAYS seeing improvements.

I don't think I'll ever be "fast"... but I would like to run a 10K at some point faster than I did the first (and only other) time I did it... like 12 years ago!

Glad to have found your blog {via #SheReadsTruth on Twitter}. Looking forward to being a regular reader! I too started with C25K.... awesome program!!! I'm currently training for my first Half Marathon, and loving it!

I'm so glad you found me and stopped by! That's so awesome that you're training for your first half-marathon. When is the big day?
